What to do during an oxygen concentrator power failure

Prepare a safe backup plan for home oxygen equipment if the electricity supply fails.

A home concentrator normally requires mains electricity. Plan the response in advance and follow the patient’s healthcare instructions.

Before a power failure

  • Ask the healthcare provider or supplier about an appropriate backup plan
  • Keep backup equipment and contact details easy to reach
  • Check that required accessories are available and stored safely

During a power failure

  • Follow the prescribed emergency instructions
  • Do not change oxygen flow or treatment settings without medical advice
  • Call 999 immediately for sudden or severe breathing difficulty
